Episode 21: Hikappa and Winter (Part 2)

Reunion at the Botanical Garden

The day of their appointment. Yuto left his house a little early and headed to the botanical garden.

The botanical garden in winter carried a distinct stillness. Bright, colorful flowers were few and far possible, but the air was crisp, and a calm, tranquil time flowed through the grounds.

Near the entrance of the greenhouse, Miona-sensei was waving her hand.

〈 "It's been a while." 〉

After exchanging brief greetings, Yuto showed her the photos of Hikappa. He explained, one by one, the changes he noticed since winter began and the anxieties that had been weighing on him.

"It Only Looks Like Nothing Is Happening"

After looking through the photos, Miona-sensei smiled gently and spoke.

"It's perfectly fine. Hikappa is properly preparing itself to get through the winter."

〈 "But... it just looks like it isn't growing at all..." 〉

"It is extending its roots where you cannot see them."
"Winter is simply not the season for pushing out leaves and stems."

Miona-sensei pointed toward a group of plants resting in the corner of the greenhouse.

None of them looked flashy. However, none of them were dead, either.

"If you give it extra water or fertilizer right now, you will actually end up weakening it."
"The most important thing during this period is not to alter its environment too much."

The Choice to "Do Nothing"

Yuto caught his breath, suddenly realizing his mistake.

He had thought that doing something—constantly intervening—was the true definition of "kindness."

"Waiting with absolute trust is also a wonderful way of taking care of something."

The moment he heard those words, a deep sense of relief washed over Yuto's heart.

He realized that perhaps it wasn't the winter cold stopping Hikappa's growth, but rather his own internal rush to "see immediate results."

Winter is Not a Season of Failure

On his way home, with the cold wind blowing against his face, Yuto reflected deeply on the lesson.

The stretches of time where growth is invisible. The moments when it feels as if absolutely nothing is happening.

Those are neither failures nor periods of stagnation; they are the vital "preparation periods" required for the coming season.

Hikappa remains there quietly today, looking entirely unchanged on the surface.

Yet, it is undeniably, beautifully alive.

Takeaway from this Episode
Winter is a season where doing nothing is exactly what is required. When markets don't budge or visible results vanish, anxiety easily takes over. However, the absolute core of long-term, diversified, and recurring investment is "maintaining your environment and staying the course." Growth always begins from the places you cannot see.
